The Dr. Anne Shannon Collection of Jewellery. A Lecture by John Benjamin on the 26th October 2018

November 2018

On the 26th October Woolley and Wallis were delighted to host eminent Jewellery specialist and regular on Antiques Roadshow, John Benjamin, in a talk exploring a recently consigned major collection of 19th and 20th century jewellery.

This was a rare collection that had been amassed over the course of fifty years by jewellery enthusiast and retired doctor, Anne Shannon. As part of his lecture, Mr Benjamin touched on several makers, including Castellani, Child & Child, Melillo, Ramsden & Carr and of course Georg Jensen. He told the story of how Dr. Shannon created her collection and the experiences that shaped her love of Arts and Crafts jewellery designers and makers:

“Dr Anne Shannon’s collection of antique jewellery incorporates many totemic pieces by celebrated 19th Century Revivalist goldsmiths such as Wiese, Castellani, Giuliano and Melillo as well as a truly outstanding range of Arts and Crafts designer jewels in which leading firms such as Child and Child, Ramsden & Carr and The Gaskins are all represented.

She started to buy jewellery in the 1960s, when rare and desirable antique and later jewels were far more easily available than they are today. The passion and zeal necessary to acquire beautiful jewellery has stayed with her ever since. The sheer scale and range of craftsmanship evident in this collection means that Dr Shannon can justifiably be seen as a true latter-day jewellery pioneer.”

The evening’s proceedings raised £1080 which are being donated to Salisbury Hospice Charity.
