Hospice Care Week - The Peter Gillam Support Centre

October 2019

This week as part of Hospice Care Week we're talking about what it takes to provide our expert care services.

It all started in 1981 when Dr Peter Gillam, a consultant physician in Salisbury felt there was a great need for better palliative care provision in the area.

His name is still very much with our hospice as we have our Peter Gillam Support Centre. This provides social support for both inpatients and patients from the community as well as providing a day of respite for carers. It is a place where patients can relax and take part in a variety of fun activities as well as art, music and dance therapies, aromatherapy and reflexology.

One of the most wonderful things about this place is the incredible variation of therapies that go on, with practitioners, tutors, support staff and animals that all make the experience for our Peter Gillam patients different and enjoyable.

An example of the timetable for an average week can look like this:

Monday - Forest Forge Theatre Company followed by exercise group.
Tuesday - exercise group alternates with craft activity Meditation in the afternoon on alternate weeks.
Wednesday - crafts or a talk.
Thursday - art class.
Friday - at the end of the month is carers day. This day provides carers with a safe space to talk, gain support and relax. The day will typically involve a group support session, an opportunity to try a creative activity and/or a complementary therapy together with the opportunity to meet and talk with other carers.

There are often wonderful stories that are shared during this time too, you can find out about one recently here.

Today was a great example of the different classes that go on, the patients were making bee hotels, or 'beetique hotels' as one of the patients called them :-)

The centre has an incredible group of staff, volunteers and practitioners who run the workshops. You can find more out about them here.
