Hospice Care Week - Our Inpatient Unit

October 2019

This week as part of Hospice Care Week we're talking about what it takes to provide our expert care services.

At the heart of our service is our ten-bed inpatient unit.

While our palliative care service was established in 1981 our hospice building was established entirely by money raised in the community in 1987, the building it is housed in was originally a six-bedded in-patient unit but extended to its current capacity in 1995.

Patients come to us through admissions from both the community and the main hospital, with reasons for admission covering complex symptom control, rehabilitation, multi-disciplinary assessment, complex respite and terminal care. It is a short stay unit and is not able to provide on-going care to patients without complex needs nor is it able to offer non-complex respite care.

The specialist team comprises consultants, ward doctors, nurses led by a ward sister, the therapy team and the family support team, all of whom are supported by a team of volunteers.

The Charity provides essential funding for this area. Every patient receives a welcome pack with some lovely mini toiletries; these are the extras that we are able to provide.

Of the ten rooms, five are ensuite. There is also a guest bedroom, day room and a complementary therapy room. These are furnished to a high standard with touches of home.

Much of the esthetics of the inpatient environment is supported by our Charity, this includes the soft furnishings, some of the fixtures and fittings and patient and family comforts.

The list below reflects ongoing financial support for equipment and furnishings to enable us to have the homely atmosphere but in a safe clinical environment. There are also costs associated with clinical equipment that means we are able to be responsive to patient needs.
