Sally Dowling and her Incredible Family of Fundraisers

December 2019

We are so lucky to have incredible fundraisers producing vital sums to keep all of our wonderful services going; from our inpatient unit to our community nurses and Hospice at Home through to our day unit.

One of the most heart-warming stories recently comes from the Dowling family.

Sally Dowling is currently being supported by our hospice teams and is the inspiration behind what truly is an incredible fundraising effort and one that we have never quite seen the like of before, where a patient takes the lead in raising vital finances needed to ensure the continuation of our services.

Sally wrote:

I have challenged my family to spend the next 12 months raising funds for the Hospice. We are a combined family team of 11. As well as me, there’s Peter; Amanda & Chris; Tim & Nell; Nick & Charlie; Lucy, Claire and Will. I hope that many friends may be able to join us from time to time.

Most recently the family embarked on a sponsored walk over the New Forest tracks from Frogham to Fritham and back - a 13km round trip. Sally trained every day to make sure she could walk the first part with her family. Amanda, Sally's daughter, said that what was so lovely about the walk was that it featured 'three generations of the family walking on the day'. Sally and her family’s fundraising total so far stands at an incredible £5,130.00!

When asked about Sally’s tenacity and drive, Amanda says that critically what her Mum's challenges to herself and the family have done (aside from raising funds) is to provide the whole family with a positive focus.

As one challenge comes to a successful conclusion, Sally and her unfaltering family of fundraisers change focus to the next ones, which include selling Christmas Cards during the festive season and preparing for the next physical challenge, which is to cycle the South Downs Way between Winchester and Brighton. Two of this wonderful family of fundraisers, Nick Dowling and Chris Gotham, will take on this challenge, a 100-mile route which they plan to ride in just one day in April 2020.

This is just a small taste of what this determined woman and her family have achieved so far. We cannot thank you enough, Sally, you are an inspiration to so many and have changed the way many see how fundraising should be, thank you so very much.

Here Amanda, Sally's daughter explains the importance of these challenges to the entire family:
