Our first-ever Virtual Balloon Race, Raises 6K for Salisbury Hospice

July 2020

Sunday 12th July saw the culmination of a week of virtual balloon racing across the world in aid of Salisbury Hospice.

The virtual balloons had taken off from the hospice on 5th July and had travelled in an easterly direction with most of them over the Netherlands by midweek.

By the final day of the race, a number had made it over the German border, with a balloon called ‘Poppy’ in the lead having travelled 897.91 km.

Poppy went on to win the race and decided to donate the £500 cash prize back to the hospice, saying:

‘‘It’s for all the wonderful work the hospice teams do'

The virtual balloon race was put on by the Purepages Group, inventors of this eco-friendly web-based virtual balloon race, to bring our supporters together to design, release and race a virtual balloon for the hospice

In the end, 764 balloons took part in the race and the event raised £6,000 for the hospice.

The event was proudly sponsored by international real estate advisor Savills Salisbury.

David Cross, head of office at Savills Salisbury, said:

“With many of Salisbury Hospice Charity’s flagship fundraising events being cancelled or postponed this year, we were pleased to be able to sponsor the virtual balloon race to raise a fantastic amount of money for such an essential and important charity in the local community.”

The prize money was kindly donated by James Hay.

Stephen Mohan, Chief Operating Officer at James Hay added:

"We love being able to support the Salisbury Hospice Charity and everything they do for our local community. The virtual balloon race was such a fun and creative way to keep up the crucial fundraising that the charity needs during what has been challenging times all round."
