Hospice Hero Paul Bates takes on the London Marathon

We are delighted to congratulate Paul Bates on completing the London Marathon, in loving memory of “Mum” Margret Bates. Paul you are an inspiration to us all, for taking on such a superb challenge and for all your fundraising efforts.

“I have had the most wonderful day and felt very proud running with my hospice top. Thank you for all your support. The BBC even mentioned me and the charity!”

Paul’s Story:

“I guess if you are reading this you probably have a reasonable idea of the amazing work done by Salisbury Hospice for families and their loved ones during some of the most difficult days but here is a little of our story.

For 12 years my Mum (Margaret Bates) lived with various cancers always knowing there would be no cure and we would face the reality of those final weeks one day. During that time Mum always got on with living today and not planning too far ahead, we talked about the reality of her dying but she never stopped living. Her biggest worries remained throughout this time that she would have a calm and peaceful final few days with my Dad.  She worried about the happiness and wellbeing of me, my Dad, my brother and our families. Never wanting to be a stress or a burden while accepting that we would obviously find the journey emotional and challenging.

Salisbury Hospice were truly amazing. When my Mum died in February 2021 we still had Covid restrictions coming and going and while this meant I have never visited the Hospice itself it was clear from the video calls with Mum the level of kindness and support she was getting. The staff seemed always able to raise a smile when one was needed and comfort when a little calm was called for.

The hard work of all the team made her stays in the hospice as happy as they could be, they also made it possible for her to return home at the end, to be with my Dad, looking out at the birds she loved so much in their garden.

“ The fundraising is not so much in memory of my Mum but in the hope that the little bit of money raised will go some way to helping Salisbury Hospice support another family who find themselves in a similar situation to ours.”

Paul has raised over £1,500 to date on his JustGiving page. We thank you for your support and fundraising efforts Paul. You can still donate to Paul’s fundraiser HERE.
