On 18th October, fundraiser David Hytch will soar above the iconic grounds of Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, as part of our upcoming Zipwire Challenge in aid of Salisbury Hospice Charity.
The grounds are close to David’s heart, being the location of the first international rugby game he attended back in 1959! The cause is even closer; having witnessed the dedication and compassion of the hospice team as they cared for his wife Valerie, David is determined to raise money for, and awareness of, the work of Salisbury Hospice.
Below, David describes why he’s taking on this challenge in his own words.
“The importance of the hospice became very personal to me when my wife, Valerie, was admitted to the inpatient unit following the recommendation of the community team and our GP surgery.
The care Valerie received was incredibly personal and completely focused on her individual needs. Sadly, her condition deteriorated over the following three months despite medication, therapies and the efforts of hospital specialists. Throughout that time, the support provided by the hospice gave Valerie and our family a tremendous sense of comfort and security.
The doctors, specialist nurses, medical staff and volunteers were exceptional. We were always made welcome, and staff were open and honest in explaining how things were progressing. That experience made me determined to find a way to support the hospice myself.

David and Valerie
I decided to challenge my fear of heights by taking part in a zip-wire challenge from the roof of the Allianz Stadium at Twickenham, across the length of the pitch. This will be a daunting challenge for me — but a small one compared with the challenges faced by patients and families who rely on hospice care.
Valerie died on 31st August, with our two daughters and me by her side. Her death has reinforced for me just how important the hospice and the people who work there are to families at some of the most difficult moments of their lives. This is a service that could touch any of our lives when we need it most.
Please consider supporting my zip-wire challenge or making a donation directly to Salisbury Hospice Charity. Every donation, however large or small, can help support the incredible work carried out by the hospice and its dedicated staff and volunteers.
Thank you to everyone who has already supported me and to everyone who continues to support Salisbury Hospice.”
At Salisbury Hospice, it costs more than £4 million each year to provide our care and services. As a charity, we rely heavily on the kindness and support of our community to help us continue being there for local patients and families when they need us most.
