Frequently Asked Questions
What legal requirements should I be aware of when fundraising?
When organising your own fundraising event for Salisbury Hospice Charity, it's important to ensure you comply with all necessary legal and safety regulations:
- Permissions – If you’re holding a public event or collecting money, you may need permission from your local council or venue. This includes applying for a Temporary Event Notice (TEN) if your event involves the sale of alcohol, live or recorded music, dancing, or public entertainment. You can find more information on the UK government website.
- Licensing – Activities like raffles, lotteries, or selling alcohol may require specific licences.
- Insurance – You may need Public Liability Insurance to protect yourself and your attendees.
- Health & Safety – It's good practice to complete a basic risk assessment for any event involving members of the public.
Not sure where to start? Our team is always happy to help guide you through this.
What is matched funding and how can I access it?
Matched funding is when your employer agrees to match the money you raise - effectively doubling your donation. Many companies offer this as part of their employee benefits. To access matched funding:
- Ask your employer or HR team if they support matched giving
- Provide them with evidence of your fundraising (e.g. sponsor form or JustGiving link)
- Let us know about the match so we can acknowledge the full amount raised
It’s a brilliant way to increase your fundraising impact!

Insurance
Whilst we really appreciate your support our insurance will not provide indemnity cover for you. Events and fundraisers are carried out at your own risk so make sure you check that the venue you are using has public liability insurance and you complete a full risk assessment to ensure you are prepared for any eventuality.
Collections
If you're organising a collection to raise funds for Salisbury Hospice Charity, whether in a public space, at a local venue, or in your workplace - it’s important to ensure everything is carried out safely, legally and respectfully.
Public collections
If you’re planning to collect donations in a public place, such as on a high street or outside a supermarket- you must apply for a permit from the local authority. Every council has its own process and lead times, so make sure you check the requirements early.
Private collections
For collections held on private property (like in a shop, pub, office or school), you’ll need written permission from the property owner or manager.
Important: All collectors must be aged 16 or over. For legal and safeguarding reasons, under-16s cannot take part in public fundraising collections.
Raffles, lotteries, and prize draws
There are clear legal guidelines around organising raffles, lotteries, and prize draws. You can find full details on the Gambling Commission website, but here’s a helpful summary:
If you're planning to run a raffle, tombola, duck race or other game of chance at an event, and tickets will only be sold during the event, then a licence is typically not required.
However, if you want to sell tickets in advance of the event or to people not attending, you may need a licence or to run it as a prize draw instead.
Please note that:
- Supporters cannot use Salisbury Hospice Charity’s licence
- Only non-commercial organisations are eligible to apply for a lottery licence via their local council.
Before organising any kind of raffle or lottery, please contact our Fundraising Team to make sure you're set up correctly and fully compliant.
